High Fiber Breakfast Cereals for IBS: A Dietitian’s Guide to the Best Picks (and Ones to Avoid)

High Fiber Breakfast Cereals

Breakfast cereals high in fiber sound like an easy, quick win for people trying to increase their fiber intake. This is especially true after being told that “more fiber” is the answer to constipation, bloating, or irregular bowel movements. However, many people reach for a high fiber cereal expecting relief. Instead, they end up with […]

One of the most concerning patterns I see with IBS One of the most concerning patterns I see with IBS and SIBO is how quickly people are told to shrink their diet in an attempt to control symptoms.

At first, eating fewer foods can feel helpful because reducing fermentable carbohydrates (or fuel to the bacteria) can temporarily decrease gas production and symptom intensity.

But over time, chronic restriction often reduces microbial diversity, limits the fibers that feed beneficial bacteria, slows motility, and can impair digestive enzyme and bile production. This can worsen nutrient deficiencies, increase sensitivity to foods, create more fear around eating, and ultimately leave your digestive system even less resilient.

The goal should never be creating the smallest possible list of safe foods. The goal is helping your body tolerate more, not less.

If your diet keeps getting smaller, comment the word COACHING. It may be time to rethink your approach.

Is your undereating causing your gut issues? It c Is your undereating causing your gut issues?

It can impact your SIBO! ⬇️

I get it… When you feel awful, food is the last thing on your mind!

Except undereating can actually backfire on you and make your symptoms worse.

Here are some signs that you are undereating…

⭐️ Chronic constipation
⭐️ Loss of period
⭐️ Always cold
⭐️ Trouble sleeping
⭐️ Hair loss

If this sounds like you, then prioritizing balanced and consistent meals is your first step in healing your gut! ⬇️

Undereating can cause increased cortisol, nutrient deficiencies, thyroid dysfunction, and decreased vagus nerve activation, all of which are root causes to SIBO.

Undereating is one of the most common factors that can keep you from healing your IBS and SIBO.

Comment the word MASTERCLASS to learn all the factors keeping you from healing.

One day you will realize that healing was never ju One day you will realize that healing was never just about reducing bloating, fixing your bowel movements, or finally getting the “perfect” protocol.
It was about getting your life back.

So many people struggling with IBS and SIBO do not realize just how much mental space their symptoms have taken over until they finally reach a place where food no longer feels scary and every decision is no longer centered around their gut.

✨ You stop checking restaurant menus days in advance
✨ You stop fearing travel, social events, and eating outside your routine
✨ You start to enjoy cooking again and eat at places you never thought you would
✨ You stop planning your entire life around whether your digestion will cooperate that day

This is what I wish more people understood.

Healing is not just about symptom management. It is about creating enough freedom that your gut stops being the thing running your life.

I have worked with so many women who came to me convinced they would always have to live this way, only to realize later how much of their life had slowly been shaped around fear, restriction, and constantly trying to stay one step ahead of symptoms.

You deserve more than simply learning how to manage discomfort.
You deserve to feel like yourself again.

If you are tired of feeling like your gut controls every decision you make, comment MASTERCLASS and I will send you my free training where I break down the biggest reasons so many people stay stuck in the IBS and SIBO cycle.

Is your gas clearing the room? 😳💨 Passing gas is Is your gas clearing the room? 😳💨

Passing gas is a normal part of digestion. It should happen daily, but when the odor is consistently strong or foul, it might be time to look a little deeper.

Yes, certain foods, medications, and infections can play a role, but three of the most common causes I see are:

💨 Constipation – When stool lingers in the colon, it has more time to ferment, leading to stronger, smellier gas and stools.

💨 SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) – When bacteria overgrow in the small intestine, they ferment carbohydrates prematurely, creating gases like hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide—often resulting in sulfur-like gas and even bad breath.

💨 Incomplete Protein Breakdown – When protein-rich foods aren't properly digested, often due to low stomach acid, slow motility, or bacterial imbalances, they can ferment and produce foul-smelling compounds like ammonia and sulfur gases.

Occasional smelly gas? No big deal.

But if it's frequent, it may be worth exploring what’s going on under the surface.

Patterns of bloating can tell you more than you ma Patterns of bloating can tell you more than you may think.

If you’re bloated after meals or by the end of the day, the location can offer clues to what needs support.

🔹 Upper bloating (under ribs, pressure after eating)
Often linked to impaired stomach digestion — low stomach acid, enzyme or bile support, stress, eating too fast, or long-term antacid use.

🔹 Lower bloating (below the belly button, worse by evening)
Commonly points to intestinal fermentation from issues like SIBO, dysbiosis, constipation, or slow motility. Gas builds when food sits too long or ferments in the wrong place.

🔹 Bloating all over (generalized, puffy, water retention)
Could also point to SIBO, or SIFO, as well as overall gut inflammation.

Bloating is a message your body is communicating with you. Instead of cutting more foods, ask: What system needs support?

Healing is not always visible, but that does not m Healing is not always visible, but that does not mean nothing is changing.

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make during their IBS and SIBO journey is assuming progress is only happening when digestive symptoms completely disappear. If bloating is still there or symptoms are not improving as quickly as expected, it can feel like nothing is working.

But healing is often happening long before the major symptoms fully resolve.

I remind clients all the time that progress is not always measured by what is happening in the bathroom or whether bloating has disappeared overnight. Sometimes the body starts showing signs of improvement in ways that are much easier to overlook.

✨ Brain fog starts lifting and mental clarity improves
✨ Energy levels become more stable throughout the day
✨ Food tolerance slowly begins expanding
✨ Fear around eating starts becoming less overwhelming
✨ You stop overanalyzing every meal and symptom
Healing is rarely linear, and often the body begins restoring foundational functions before the symptoms you are hyper-focused on fully improve.

Sometimes the biggest signs of progress are not digestive symptoms disappearing overnight.

Sometimes progress looks like slowly getting pieces of yourself back.

So if you feel like your body is not healing fast enough, take a moment to recognize the changes that may already be happening beneath the surface. Progress is not always obvious, but that does not mean your body is not moving in the right direction.
