Are Beans Low FODMAP? A Dietitian’s Guide to Safe Beans and Serving Sizes for IBS and SIBO

Are beans low FODMAP?

With the winter and soup season on the horizon, you may be wondering are beans low FODMAP? Beans are cheap, high in fiber, and loaded with plant protein and a perfect addition to a cozy meal. But for many of my clients with IBS or SIBO, one scoop of beans means hours of gas and […]

Low FODMAP made you feel better, so you never stop Low FODMAP made you feel better, so you never stopped. I see this all the time in practice, and staying on it indefinitely can quietly work against your gut over time.

The low FODMAP diet works by removing fermentable fibers that feed your gut bacteria, and for many people that reduces symptoms. Those same fibers are what your microbiome depends on to survive. Your bacteria ferment them into short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which fuel the cells lining your colon and keep your gut barrier strong.

When you stay restricted long term, bacterial diversity drops, butyrate production falls, and the gut lining becomes more permeable. Paradoxically, you can become more sensitive to foods over time. The diet was designed as a 2–6 week diagnostic elimination phase, followed by reintroduction to find your personal tolerance.

Here’s how to use it the way it was intended:

🧭 Complete all three phases with a FODMAP-trained dietitian: elimination, reintroduction, and personalization. Each phase has a job, and stopping at elimination skips the part that tells you what your gut actually tolerates.

🔬 Go slow and systematic during reintroduction. Testing one FODMAP group at a time lets you identify your actual triggers instead of avoiding everything indefinitely.

🏁 Treat symptom relief as information. Feeling better on elimination means you’ve reduced the load on a reactive gut. The underlying driver, whether that’s SIBO, motility, or something else, still needs to be addressed.

🤝 Get support for long-term restriction. The downstream effects on microbiome diversity and gut barrier integrity can delay healing and make it harder to expand your diet later.

The goal is the widest, most varied diet your gut can handle, because that variety is what feeds a resilient microbiome.

If you’ve been stuck on low FODMAP and aren’t sure how to get off it, comment ROADMAP and I’ll send you details on my Root Cause Roadmap Session, where we map out what’s driving your symptoms and how to expand your diet safely.

If you continue to have SIBO relapses, you need to If you continue to have SIBO relapses, you need to look deeper into the root cause!

One of the most overlooked root causes I see in practice is untreated H. pylori, a bacteria that lives in the stomach and quietly disrupts digestion, stomach acid, and nutrient absorption.

When stomach acid drops:
⬇️ Your natural defense against bacteria weakens
⬇️ Food isn’t broken down efficiently
⬇️ Motility slows
⬇️ Bacteria can migrate into the small intestine

This is the perfect breeding ground for SIBO!

This is why many people “treat” SIBO multiple times without lasting relief because the upstream issue was never corrected.

Common signs H. pylori may be involved:
• Chronic bloating or upper abdominal pressure
• Reflux or burning
• Low iron or B12
• Nausea
• Poor response to gut protocols
• Recurrent SIBO

If you are tired of doing the same protocols over and over again without help looking into the root cause, comment ROADMAP to book your Root Cause call to finally manage your symptoms for good!

SIBO is one of those gut health topics where more SIBO is one of those gut health topics where more treatment doesn’t always mean better results.

Here are 4 misconceptions I see all the time:

❌ SIBO is a standalone diagnosis
❌ SIBO is simply “too much bacteria”
❌ Multiple rounds of antibiotics will guarantee better results
❌ You need to avoid carbs to heal

The reality? SIBO is just one piece of a bigger puzzle.

If you want lasting improvement, you have to look at the factors that influence the small intestine

✅ Gut motility
✅ Stomach acid/bile flow
✅ Digestion
✅ Anatomy
✅ Nervous system regulation
✅ Nutrition

Instead of focusing on what to remove or what treatment to do next, you need to zoom out and look at what support your gut needs to build an environment where SIBO doesn't thrive.

Ready to stop guessing and get to the root of your gut symptoms?

👻 Healing from SIBO or IBS doesn’t have to be spoo 👻 Healing from SIBO or IBS doesn’t have to be spooky… but to see real progress, there are a few habits worth ghosting this year:

🍽️ Overly restrictive diets – Cutting out all carbs or sticking to rigid plans isn’t the only path. You can beat SIBO/IBS without going ultra-restrictive.

😬 Eating too Quickly – If you are rushing thru your meals, not chewing your food, you are going to remain bloated and uncomfortable.

😫 Constantly Multi- Tasking – You cannot heal if you are only focusing on diet and supplement changes. IBS/SIBO takes a full body approach.

💊 Random supplements – Not every pill helps, and what isn’t personalized is often just a waste of money.

🍪 Cookie cutter protocols – If you’re handed the same generic plan as everyone else, or following some random instagram protocol, it’s time to question it. Your gut deserves a tailored approach.

🚙 Expecting overnight results – Healing takes time, consistency, and patience. The journey is worth it.

The vagus nerve connects your brain and your gut, The vagus nerve connects your brain and your gut, and it’s one of the most overlooked pieces of digestive healing I see in practice.

Most of its job is sending messages from your gut up to your brain. The rest sends messages from your brain down to your gut, telling your stomach to make acid, your pancreas to release enzymes, your gallbladder to release bile, and your intestines to keep food moving. When you’re stressed all the time, your body stays in “stress mode” and those messages get weaker. Digestion slows down, you make less acid and fewer enzymes, and food sits in your stomach and intestines longer than it should.

That’s why so many of my clients notice their symptoms follow their schedule. The bloating shows up on the days they eat in the car between work and practice, and the constipation hits hardest during their busiest weeks.

The good news is that your vagus nerve responds to daily practice. Here are three things you can start today:

🌬️ Slow breathing with a longer exhale before meals: Breathing in for 4 counts and out for 6 to 8 counts shifts your body out of stress mode, so your stomach is ready to make acid and enzymes when you eat.
🍽️ Sit down and chew thoroughly: Seeing, smelling, and chewing your food signals your stomach through the vagus nerve to start digestion before the first bite even reaches it.
🎶 Hum or gargle daily: The vagus nerve runs through the muscles of your throat and vocal cords, so humming and gargling activate it directly.

No protocol works well in a body stuck in stress mode, so supporting your nervous system gives everything else a better chance of working.

Ignoring the nervous system is one of the biggest mistakes I see in SIBO and gut healing, and I break it down, along with the other mistakes that keep people stuck, in my free masterclass. Comment MASTERCLASS and I’ll send you the link to register.

Could your symptoms be histamine related? Histami Could your symptoms be histamine related?

Histamine is a normal chemical messenger involved in your immune response, digestion, and nervous system function. Problems start when histamine is being produced or consumed faster than your body can break it down (largely through the DAO enzyme in your gut).

When that happens, you start seeing a pattern of symptoms that look unrelated on the surface:

✨ Flushing — blood vessels dilate as circulating histamine rises, which is why you feel suddenly hot or turn red

✨ Bloating — especially after high-histamine meals, since histamine affects gut motility and acid secretion

✨ Runny or stuffy nose — histamine triggers the same nasal response as an allergic reaction, without an actual allergen present

✨ Itching — histamine binds to skin receptors and triggers the itch response directly

✨ Dizziness — often tied to histamine's effect on blood pressure and vascular tone, especially after eating

✨ Heart palpitations — histamine can affect heart rate and rhythm through its receptors in cardiac tissue

These symptoms don't automatically mean you have histamine intolerance. They overlap heavily with IBS, SIBO, food sensitivities, hormonal shifts, and MCAS, which is why cutting out every high-histamine food isn't always the right first step.

It is important to regulate histamine load as well as your capacity to clear it. That usually comes back to gut health, digestion, nutrient status (copper, B6, and vitamin C all support DAO function), hormones, and how well your body is breaking histamine down in the first place.

If you're noticing several of these symptoms together, it's worth looking at the full picture instead of treating each one on its own.
